Hedge funds used to be the mavericks of the financial industry, small and nimble players making huge profits behind a veil of mystery and miscomprehension. These days, they're much tamer and some are large multi-national companies employing hundreds of people. Hedge funds operate under a range if different investment styles, including macro, equity long-short and convertible arbitrage. Increasingly, large hedge funds have been training their own staff as the trader talent pool from the investment banks has dried up. Most large funds now have graduate training programmes or 'academies', but competition for places in incredibly high.
