An experienced M&A banker who’s participated in the graduate recruitment process, says:

Overall the best CV of this batch of four that I’ve reviewed. Really strong academics (he has quantified why he thinks he’ll get a First this year) from decent institutions and some impressive extra-curricular achievements, again very well quantified so not just baseless claims.

The owner of this comes across as humble (nothing on the CV sounds arrogant) and hard-working. I believe he has the capacity to work as hard as his chosen area of M&A requires, but his conviction in this choice and interest in this area is not well demonstrated beyond his Deloitte prize and university society work, although clearly this helps.

I’d call him in to interview with the caveat perhaps that all work and no play has made Jack a dull boy – I’d need to like him as well as believe he can do the job in order to hire him.
