Hong Kong isn’t exactly a global hotbed for freshly-minted Goldman Sachs partners. Of the 69 people to have just made the upper echelons at GS, only five are based in the city that serves as the bank’s main Asian hub.
But within Asia Pacific, Hong Kong is still the standout location if you want to make partner. Other markets in the region can only muster five partners between them. Three of these newbies are based in Sydney, while Beijing and Tokyo both now have one extra partner. Singapore drew a blank.
We asked Goldman to tell us more about its five new Hong Kong partners, 60% of whom are women, higher than the global average of 26%. Here’s what you need to know.
Stephanie Smith, head of Asia Pacific operations
Smith joined Goldman Sachs in 1999 as an analyst in the securities division. She moved into operations five years later, where she’s since held various leadership positions in client onboarding, lending and investing, credit derivatives, interest rates products, and GS bank USA operations. Smith, who made MD in 2010, is chair of the Asia Pacific Regional New Activities Committee and is involved in several other groups at the firm, including the Goldman Sachs Asia Bank Management Committee and the Asia Pacific Black and Hispanic/Latino Network.
Tanweer Kabir, head of Asia macro equities and synthetics trading
Kabir joined Goldman Sachs in 2000 as an equities trader in Sydney. He moved to London in 2002 to trade equity finance products and later became head of Goldman’s European synthetics business. Kabir, who was promoted to MD in 2006, relocated to Hong Kong in 2014 to take up his current role. The MIT graduate worked as a portfolio manager at County NatWest Investment Management from 1993 to 1998, and as an interest rate derivatives trader at Merrill Lynch between 1998 and 2000.
Zheng Li, head of equity solutions group, Asia ex-Japan
Li made MD six years ago and now also manages the China investment banking solutions business across asset classes. She joined Goldman in 2003 as an analyst in the investment management division and moved to the IB solutions team in 2007, where she “completed a number of significant strategic derivatives transactions with corporate clients”. Zheng earned a BEng in Electronic Engineering from Imperial College London in 2002 and then briefly worked at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory as a research student in 2003.
Jamie Goodman, co-head of cross product sales, Asia ex-Japan
Goodman’s team is responsible for high-touch execution, which includes products such as credit convertibles, equity derivatives and Delta 1. It’s also heavily involved in the distribution and sourcing of ECM transactions. Goodman is a GS lifer who first worked for the firm in 2003 as a summer intern and then joined the European research sales team the following year. He moved to Asia equities sales trading in Hong Kong in 2007 and was named MD in 2012. Prior to his current role, Goodman headed up global institutional sales.
Philippa Vizzone, co-head of Asia Pacific equity research
Vizzone, who got to MD in 2006, was previously chief operating officer of Asia Pacific equity research and head of Hong Kong Equity research. She joined Goldman in Hong Kong in 2000 (from ABN AMRO) as an equity analyst in the Asian financial sector, covering banks, insurers and exchanges across the region. Vizzone was appointed business unit leader for North Asian financials, based in Tokyo, in 2009 and co-head of Asian financials in Hong Kong two years later. Vizzone is currently a member of the Micro Research Operating Group and the Asia Pacific Investment Review Committee.
