A London quant fund keeps hiring tech staff

After a breathing space, it seems that Squarepoint Capital has resumed its hiring streak. 

The investment management firm that spun off from the property trading desk at Barclays in 2015 has been going after people to strengthen its technology team. Over the last eight months, the quant hedge fund has brought onboard at least five software engineers and developers in London. The firm's website shows it is looking to fill 18 more tech roles spread across London, Singapore and Montreal, Canada.

Patrick Engelbert, Radu Floroiu and Matt Law joined the firm as software engineers in May, April and March this year respectively. Karim Gardabou joined in as low latency trading developer last December, while Rohan Kopparapu came onboard as another software engineer in October 2018.

Engelbert is an electronic and information engineering graduate from Imperial College London, who worked as a software engineer at cloud-based communication services provider Starleaf before joining Squarepoint. Floroiu, a post graduate in Computer Science from the University of St. Andrews, was an application developer with JP Morgan for four and a half years and a computer programmer with BlueNote Communications for one and a half years, prior to joining Squarepoint, while Law completed his Master's degree in Physics at Durham University and worked at Solarflare Communications for two and a half years.

Squarepoint likes to hire banking technologists, particularly if they have experience in C++ or Python. Kopparapu was previously with Bank of America Merrill Lynch as a technology analyst for one and half years, and Gardabou was working with Goldman Sachs for about a year before moving to Squarepoint.

According to Squarepoint's website, the firm prefers graduates with degrees in Mathematics and Applied Sciences for investment and technology positions. Sparepoint's most recent accounts, for the year ending December 2018, show it employing 75 people in London (up from 65 one year earlier) and paying them a combined £22.6m ($84m). - This makes an average of £300k per head.
