We’ve already covered how to assemble a CV that will get you a job in trading, but what if you want to get a job in an investment banking sales team? What should a sales CV look?
Is there any real difference between a sales CV and a trading CV?
No. Not much. When you apply, you will almost always apply for sales and trading – not for one or the other. It’s only when you make it through to interview that you’ll be able to be specific.
Therefore, you still need to write about your quantitative and analytical abilities and your passion for the financial markets.
However, if you’re more interested in sales, you must also be a ‘people person’: a good communicator and a good team player.
Sales is all about making your client feel special and making sure that they are sending your bank business. If you work in sales, you’ll be taking your clients out 3-5 times a week and you’ll be talking on the phone to them all day.
Therefore, if you want to work in sales as opposed to trading, there are a few things you need to emphasise a little more strongly on your CV.
- Social Clubs.
- Sports Teams – S&T recruiters love athletes (it shows you are a team player, and that can handle stressful situations).
- General involvement in extracurricular activities / non-work-related activities.
