Standard Chartered has appointed Mark Ellis, formerly of Deutsche Bank, as its new global head of end user services. Ellis has relocated from London to Singapore for his new MD-level role, which he started on 5 August, according to a spokesperson for Stan Chart.
Ellis was head of end user strategy, architecture and digital workplace transformation at Deutsche, according to his online profile. He joined the German bank in December 2016 as head of digital workplace transformation but moved into his expanded role just four months later.
End-user technologists at banks are typically in charge of ensuring that their firm’s tech platforms work efficiency and seamlessly for the employees who use them on a regular basis. Their role has grown in importance in recent years as global banks replace their legacy systems and undergo expensive digital transformations, which require well-designed workplace interfaces.
Stan Chart’s 2018 annual report, released in February, states that it spent $1.6bn on tech last year, up from $900m in 2015, but investment into its legacy systems flatlined during that time. The bank will continue to invest in “technology and digital capabilities to enhance client experience and build scale efficiently”, according to the report.
It is likely that Ellis will play a key part in this transformation. He is now “leading the end user services team to deliver a next generation workplace that promotes greater collaboration, productivity, security and mobility across its global businesses”, says the Stan Chart spokesperson.
Prior to Deutsche, Ellis spent more than five years at Credit Suisse in London, most recently as head of end user engineering. He was responsible for nine engineering teams, including mobile, remote technologies, and e-communications compliance.
The tech veteran started his career in the mid-1990s and worked for Microsoft and then NatWest Markets as head of global debt markets IT support. He was at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein between 1998 and 2003, latterly as head of enterprise services and CTO for North America. Ellis worked as head of strategic consulting at Citihub Consulting for eight years before he joined Credit Suisse in 2011.
