So you thought Uber was no more in Singapore? Think again. While you can’t use Uber to get a ride or order a meal (the company sold its Southeast Asian operations to Grab last March) you can get a job at the tech firm in Singapore. Moreover, Uber now has a thing for hiring bankers.
Uber retains an office in the Republic, which it uses as its headquarters for the wider Asia Pacific region, despite no longer offering its services locally. Among its latest recruits is former HSBC employee James Lieow, who’s joined UberEats, the company’s food delivery platform, in a Singapore-based business operations role, according to his online profile.
This appears to be quite a career change for Lieow, who spent the previous seven years at HSBC in Singapore, Hong Kong and China, latterly running the Beijing desk for MNC corporate treasury solutions, and global markets corporate sales. Earlier on in his HSBC career he focused on the distribution of electronic FX and commodities products in Singapore.
Jain is now working with a number of former finance professionals at Uber. There are 18 people at the company’s Singapore office who have previously worked for mainstream banks, according to LinkedIn results.
They include Brooks Entwistle, chief international business officer at Uber, who worked for Goldman Sachs for more than 18 years, latterly as a partner and chairman of South East Asia. They also include regional program manager Sambhav Jain, who joined late last year after a three-year stint as an investments product manager at Citi.
Uber is likely to keep on raiding the Singapore banking sector for talent. It has 20 Singapore-based vacancies on its careers site, some of which specifically call for bankers to apply. If you have three years of investment banking experience, you could become the new APAC regional operations manager (strategic projects) for UberEats, for example.
