The most sought-after job at Google in Hong Kong

If you’re a computer science student in Hong Kong and you want to intern at Google next year, you’re rapidly running out of options in Asia.

The tech firm has already closed applications for its software engineering internship and its student training in engineering programme, both based in its APAC headquarters in Singapore. Moreover, these roles were effectively closed to most Hong Kong-based students this year, because Google was “unable to extend offers to anyone who cannot work from Singapore due to lockdown visa/travel restrictions”. Hong Kong’s travel bubble with Singapore was only agreed last week and has yet to launch.

But there is still a way into Google for local student technologists next summer. The catches? There’s just one relevant role on offer on Google’s careers site, and it’s for a Hong Kong-based business intern, meaning that tech students will be competing against their counterparts “from all academic disciplines” to land the job.

A tech recruiter told us that computer science majors in Hong Kong should still apply because the internship would provide a “huge boost” to them eventually securing a full-time graduate technology job, likely in Singapore, a much larger Asian hub for developers. Exposure to Google’s business and clients will also be useful in any permanent technology role at the company, he adds.

Moreover, Google says the intern’s “responsibilities and detailed projects” will be determined by their “educational background, interests and skills”, meaning that someone with programming knowledge could presumably put some of that to use.

The Hong Kong business internship runs for a minimum of 10 weeks between May and September 2021 and is open to those currently enrolled in the penultimate year of a Bachelor’s or Master’s course.

As well as “knowledge of the internet and Google’s technology and business” you should have project management, analytical and interpersonal skills, according to Google’s careers site. Applications must be submitted before 20 November.
