Deutsche Bank’s interview questions seem to be strangely similar to most other banks’ interview questions. Their brainteasers, however, may be substantially more difficult.

A month ago, the German bank broadcast the following brainteaser to candidates who might be interested in working there. Can you work it out? You need to provide the next two numbers in the series. Post your answers in the comments box below. We’ll post the answer here on Monday.

The answer I worked out is 101, 112, 131, 415, 161, 718, 191, 10111

Reason:

I split the problem in to three separate series based of their position in the 3 digit numbers above. So hence;

First digits: 1, 1, 1, 4, 1, 7

Second digits: 0, 1, 3, 1, 6, 1

Third digits: 1, 2, 1, 5, 1, 8

I noticed in the third digit sequence, every odd index number position was 1 and every even index position number was +3 of the prior even index position (with the exception of 2). I.e. 6th number = 4th number + 3 8 = 5 + 3

Which led me to believe that the next two numbers in this sequence is 1 and 11

Then I noticed the similar behaviour in the First digits sequence where every odd position was a 1 and the every even position was +3 of the prior even position. Therefore I believe that the next two numbers would be 1 and 10

Finally I saw how the Second digit sequence was influenced by the Third digit sequence. Every even index number was 1 and every odd index number was the sum of the prior two index number in the Third digit sequence. I.e.

1st index is 0 because the prior two number in Third digits sequence don’t exist.

3rd index is 3 because the prior two numbers in the third digits sequence is 1 and 2 and therefore 1+ 2 = 3

5th index is 6 because the prior two numbers in the third digits sequence is 1 and 5 and therefore 1+ 5 = 6

and hence the 7th index is 9 because the prior two numbers in the third digits sequence is 1 and 8 and therefore 1+ 8 = 9

So the next two numbers in the Second digit sequence is 9 and 1.

So I concatenated all the sequence together which lead me to the sequence stated at the start.

Following the pattern 1×1, x1x, 1×1, x1,…. and starting with x=0

we find that the two numbers in the series will be 192 021.

a nice way to reject a plenty capable people. success in non-sense interview questions has zero correlation with work performance.

Are you serious?^^Just put away the “,” and then you’ll see it’s just the numbers 0 – 10 with a 1 in between… That’s why all these brain teasers are not made for the mathematicians, engineers and business school guys but just to find the smart people, who can think simple and fast ;-)

vague question:

(1) 192, 021 –> just 3-digits numbers, from 10-21

(2) 191, 101 –> just 3-digits numbers, pattern: 1 x 1 x+1 1 x+2…; x=0

I’d prefer the second one, because 021 isn’t a real number and 21 just don’t fit in

(1) 192, 021 –> 3-digits-numbers, sequence of 10 11 …

(2) 191, 101 –> 3-digits-numbers, pattern: 1 x 1 x+1 1 x+2 1 x+3…; x=0

I’d prefer the second one, because 021 isn’t a number. You have to write 21 and this just don’t fit in the numerical order.

Too easy! Next two correct in sequence should be 191 then 21

Althoug there is nothing in the preceding sequence to suggest that each figure should have 3 digits, it could be equally valid to answer 191 the 021. And so that would mean the numbers after that would be 222 then 324

Surely the more critical thinking brainteaser should be: If the candidates who answered such questions correctly and were deemed smart enough with successful careers at these firms, then why did they need to be bailed out during the financial crisis? Discuss in not less than 1,000 feeble excuses and psycho-babble du-jour!

so in this series we have 101, 112, 131, 415, 161, 718, ?, ?.

so let us take the alternate numbers first:

101, _ ,131, _ ,161, _ ,?

here we observe that each number has a difference of 30 so the first unknown number is 191.

now the next alternate series:

112, _ ,415, _ , 718, _ , ?

here we can clearly see that each number is 303 more than the previous number so the next logical number in the series is 1021.

so the answers are 191 and 1021.

If you remove the fact that they are looking at 3 digit numbers the order is simply 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18. Thus to find the next 3 digit numbers in this sequence add 19 20 21 which produces the numbers 192 and 021.

All the numbers are simply the sequence of 10 11 12 13 etc etc but divided in a series of 3 numbers per Group. Simple.

There are two series together instead of just one.

Ser 1: 101, 131, 161, 191, 221.. increment of 30.

Ser 2: 112, 415, 718, 1021, 1324, .. increment of 303.

That’s it.
