Some professionals in the Singapore banking sector are doing better than others during the pandemic. Designers, including people with user experience (UX) and/or user interface (UI) expertise, are among those who have become more in demand over the past few months.
Banks need more designers to help build the new and enhanced digital products that they are launching as customers perform more online transactions because of Covid-19.
Among the senior designers to have moved jobs in recent weeks is Natasha Salleh. She joined Standard Chartered earlier this month as director of experience design in the firm’s SC Design unit, specialising in UX as well as customer experience (CX) and human-centered design (HCD), according to her LinkedIn profile.
She has come onboard during a busy time for the bank’s digital channels. There was a 30% year-on-year jump in the volume of digital transactions made in March 2020, according to a statement from the bank earlier this month. In April, Stan Chart’s online trading platform saw a 129% spike in client applications compared with the average monthly rate last year.
Salleh’s CV shows that design skills cut across sectors and that banks are not just hiring from each other. She spent the previous two years at EY in Singapore as manager of experience design, leading “creative thinking, visual and experience design”.
Prior to EY, Salleh was briefly a lead visual designer at Grab Financial, and from 2015 to 2017 she was with Deloitte Digital as an experience design consultant. During her stints at consulting firms, she “delivered award-winning designs” for clients in financial services – and this likely made her an attractive candidate for Stan Chart.
Salleh’s hire is part of a push by Stan Chart to take on more design talent in Singapore, despite its March freeze on non-critical recruitment and a subsequent fall in overall vacancies. Among several Singapore-based design roles on its careers site, Stan Chart is looking for a senior UX designer to lead the UX team for Solv, a new platform it is building for small and medium enterprises.
The bank is also hiring more broadly in technology in Singapore. Just under half (48%) of Stan Chart’s Singapore vacancies are in tech and analytics, according to its careers site.
