If you’re looking for a job at DBS, you’ll be pleased to know that the bank has been doing plenty of hiring of late. DBS’s headcount rose by 1,363 in the year to end-June to reach 27,060, according to its second quarter financial results. You’ll also be happy to hear that DBS salaries are typically more generous than those at local rivals OCBC and UOB.
But before you apply for a DBS job, you’ll want to do plenty of research into who might be interviewing you (or ultimately deciding whether to hire you). To help kickstart your research, we’ve compiled a non-exhaustive list (in no particular order) of just some of the people you might want to know about at DBS, across different departments, mainly based on their public profiles.
Tan Su Shan, group head of institutional banking
Tan, who previously led DBS’s consumer banking and wealth management division, took up her current job on 1 February this year, following the retirement of Jeanette Wong. Tan joined DBS from Morgan Stanley in 2010, and grew consumer banking and wealth management to account for about 40% of DBS’s total revenue, up from 29% when she first took charge. Tan was a managing director at Citi from 2005 to 2008.
Jacky Tai, group head of trading
Tai was promoted into his current role in April last year, having previously been head of treasury and markets at DBS in China. Tai started his banking career at JP Morgan, and worked for the US firm in Hong Kong, Singapore and New York. He also held global market derivatives trading and managerial positions in the 1990s with Dresdner Bank and Nomura, before joining DBS in 1999.
Jimmy Ng, group head of technology and operations
Ng, who was previously deputy head of tech and ops, took over the top job just last month following the departure of DBS veteran David Gledhill, the man responsible for standardising the bank’s platforms, and picking up Euromoney’s 2018 award for the world’s best digital bank in the process. Ng joined DBS in November 2009 as head of consumer banking operations, and was appointed group head of audit in 2012. He worked for ABN Amro from 1996 to 2008, latterly as regional head of global markets operations for Asia Pacific, and then transferred to RBS when it acquired the Dutch bank.
Soh Siew Choo, group head of consumer banking and big data/AI technology
Soh took on her current role, which focuses on two of the most innovative areas in banking technology, in March 2017, having worked as group head of core systems technology since 2014. Soh has been a key driver behind the DBS hackathon recruitment initiative, Hack2hire, and told us earlier this year that she likes to hire technologists from outside the banking industry. Prior to DBS, Soh was head of Asia banking technology at JP Morgan in Hong Kong.
Clifford Lee, head of fixed income
Lee has led the fixed income team at DBS for the past 15 years – responsible for the bank’s debt origination and distribution functions – and has worked in the finance sector for the best part of three decades. Lee began his banking career with Citi in 1991 and has held various senior management positions in financial institutions including Peregrine Fixed Income, WestLB, BankBoston and Commonwealth Bank.
Yulanda Chung, head of sustainability, institutional banking group
Chung, who joined DBS in 2017 after a year working as an energy finance consultant, is “responsible for the development and implementation of the bank's responsible financing framework”, according to her LinkedIn profile. Last year Chung helped DBS sign a sustainability-linked loan with Wilmar, which pegged the commodity giant’s interest rates to environmental, social and governance metrics. Having started her career as a journalist, Chung worked for Standard Chartered from 2003 to 2016, latterly as head of development impact and environment.
Han Kwee Juan, group head of strategy and planning
Han, previously a Citi lifer, joined DBS in April and reports into CEO Piyush Gupta. Han worked for Citi for 27 years leading various businesses including consumer banking, corporate banking and transaction banking. He was most recently CEO of Citi Singapore, and had oversight of the firm’s onshore retail banking, wealth management, cards and personal loans, mortgage, and retail SME businesses in Singapore.
Joseph Poon, regional head of Southeast Asia, DBS Private Bank
Poon joined DBS in 2016, having been head of UBS’s ultra-high-net-worth and global family office businesses for Southeast Asia. He’s also held senior jobs at Julius Baer, Macquarie and JP Morgan during a career of more than 20 years. DBS’s relationship managers can no longer be “singularly focused on just their clients’ financial investments”, Poon told us last year. “Many of our clients are entrepreneurs. Our RMs are trained to help them identify broader opportunities for their businesses and connect them to experts in investment and corporate banking,” he added.
Hong Nam Yeoh, head of wholesale funding
Yeoh joined DBS from Credit Suisse in Singapore in 2012, where he’d been director of institutional sales for two years. He’s now helping to manage the “bank’s balance sheet, capital position and liquidity pool”, according to his LinkedIn profile. In 2015, Yeoh notably led the issuance of Singapore’s first fixed-rate covered bonds. Yeoh began his career as an FX options dealer at Standard Chartered in 1998 and went on to hold senior sales jobs at Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan.
Royce Teo, group head, analytics, consumer banking
Teo is in charge of arguably one of DBS’s most important teams. As we’ve been reporting over the past few months local banks, global banks, and technology firms are all hiring data analysts, scientists and engineers. Teo has been a managing director at DBS since 2009 and has held five senior roles since taking his data job in January last year, including regional head of deposits and secured lending.
Dorian Delteil, team head, energy, chemicals and infrastructure, corporate banking
DBS poached Delteil in March from Standard Chartered, where he’d worked in the oil and gas group for five and a half years, latterly as an executive director. Delteil graduated in 2002 with an MSc in Civil Engineering from ESTP in Paris and then worked mainly for Credit Agricole until 2011, latterly as a director focused on the upstream oil and gas sector. In December 2011, he joined Sumitomo Mitsui in Singapore in a senior oil and gas role.
Charlie Cheng, regional head, architect, technology and operations
DBS hired Cheng from Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California in January. Cheng specialises in fintech, cloud engineering and operations, according to his online profile. He spent more than six years at Google, latterly as a director in cloud infrastructure site reliability engineering for Google Compute Engine, a platform that enables users to launch virtual machines on demand. Cheng’s move runs counter to recent trends. DBS and other banks in Singapore have lost several senior cloud professionals to Google of late.
Amy Chua, team lead, operational risk management, consumer banking
Chua is one of DBS’s most senior risk management professionals and boasts more than 20 years’ experience within the finance sector. She moved to DBS in 2014 following a stint of over seven years at RBS, latterly as head of risk and control in the APAC COO office. Chua has also worked in credit risk roles at Citi, ABN Amro and UOB.
Trevor Cheung, managing director, ecosystems, technology and operations
Cheung joined DBS in June. His move comes as banks in Singapore start to ramp up their recruitment of people with expertise in ecosystems, the platforms that banks are increasingly using to build partnerships with fintech startups. Cheung was previously VP of ecosystem management, global technical service, in the Shenzhen headquarters of Huawei, the Chinese telecoms giant.
