Think jobs at Google in Singapore, think cloud engineering and artificial intelligence. But while Google is certainly recruiting for these roles in the Republic, it’s also building up the unit that’s responsible for making the internet safer, protecting free speech, and fighting online abuse in areas such as malware, spam and account hijacking. Meet Google Trust and Safety (T&S), a team containing analysts, policy specialists, engineers, program managers and other professionals.
Google has Trust and Safety vacancies from Hyderabad in India to Sunnyvale in California, but more than 10% of the team’s openings are based at Google’s sprawling APAC headquarters in Singapore’s Mapletree Business City II office park. In contrast, Singapore’s current contribution to Google’s overall vacancy total is only 4%.
T&S jobs are in demand right now as firms such as Google and Facebook try to restore trust in their services following a torrid 18 months of scandals in the tech industry. If you can secure a T&S role at Google in Singapore this year, expect to be in demand in the local job market for the foreseeable future.
In Singapore, more than half of Google’s T&S jobs are within its YouTube product. If you want to work as a YouTube policy enforcement manager (there are jobs focused on hate speech and graphic content, respectively), you’ll need experience in areas such as solving user’s online content concerns, identifying abuse trends, setting content policy, and navigating global legal frameworks, according to Google’s careers page.
Some of Google’s other T&S jobs in Singapore demand more technical skills. As a business analyst for YouTube, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in a subject such as mathematics, statistics or computer science, although ideally you’ll have a Master’s or PhD in a “quantitative discipline”. Experience working with SQL, Dremel, Python, Java, R or SAS is a must.
Meanwhile, another analyst job comes with a data focus, demanding experience in working with statistical packages (e.g. Stata, Matlab), using SQL for large datasets, and developing machine learning models.
Google’s trust and safety team appears to be gearing up for further expansion. If you land the current strategy and operations manager role, you will help the T&S business “grow and operate effectively”.
If you’re currently working for a bank in Singapore but want to join Google’s T&S team, the good news is that the tech firm as a whole already has a track record of hiring both front-office and tech staff from the banking sector.
There are also ex-banking professionals within T&S itself. Vijitra Natephisarnwanish, a T&S policy specialist, was formerly a credit and portfolio risk analyst at Citi, for example. Meanwhile, Jiahui Tang joined the unit last September as a data analyst (safe browsing), having previously worked for BNP Paribas as a data analyst.
