Stockholm is the best Nordic financial centre

Stockholm is the most competitive financial centre (and therefore the most diverse and attractive place to work) in the Nordic region, according to new research.

The latest Global Financial Centres Index – which examines the competitiveness of cities around the world with a significant financial sector – pits the Swedish capital at 37th (up one place from the last rankings).

The rankings are based on various criteria, including infrastructure, diversity and depth and the quality of skills and staff on offer.

Obviously, the Nordic region is unlikely to challenge long-time leaders London or New York, or indeed the emerging Asian financial centres like Hong Kong and Singapore. However, the GSCI rankings are not particularly favourable.

Aside from Stockholm, Copenhagen comes in at 44th (down three places from the last rankings), followed by Oslo in 53rd (down from =45th) and Helsinki in 58th (down from 50th).

It could simply be that the elongated (but significantly improving) exposure to the Baltic region among Nordic banks has dented international perception of the cities. But ranking behind the likes of Kuala Lumpar, Wellington and the Isle of Man can’t sit well.
