What Nell Diamond, Bob’s daughter, can tell you about getting into banking

The star of yesterday was the not unattractive Nell Diamond, daughter of Bob Diamond, pictured here with her tongue out and here in nearly thigh-high boots.  Nell has become famous for her Twitter stream, which reveals – among other things that Bob and his family spent Christmas dinner talking about sandwiches, that one of the family homes is a large ski lodge and that she likes heels. Nell has worked for Deutsche Bank Securities in New York since September 2011. It’s not clear what she does there, but the fact of Nell’s employment says something about getting a first job in investment banking.

1. Contacts matter more than degree content

Nell didn’t study economics or finance. She studied English. Her dissertation wasn’t on alternative measures of risk management. It was on, ‘‘the Cultural Myth of Female Hair in the Victorian Imagination’. But, she was Bob Diamond’s daughter.

2. It helps to go to an Ivy League school and to have an international education

Nell went to Godolphin and Latymer School, Hammersmith, and then to the American School in London. Following that, she went to Princeton.

3. It helps to work it whilst at university

At Princeton, Nell didn’t devote herself solely to studying cultural perception of hair a hundred years ago, she also had a calendar of extra-curricular activities. She was part of a social media committee promoting Unicef and was part of the selection committee persuading Brooke Shields to speak at a commencement event.

4. There is nothing wrong with being a glamorous female

Nell is big on glamour, big on shoes, big on fashion and big on fashionable nightclubs. “My most prized posession is my Boujis’ member card,” she said on Twitter. If you are a woman going into banking, Nell would suggest that it is not necessary to dress down or appear sombre to fit in.

On the other hand, Nell Diamond may be an exception to the rule simply by virtue of her progeniture.
