MBA, CFA Get Hitched

Sep 24 2007

Jon Jacobs

What'll it be - a graduate degree in finance or a CFA charter? A growing number of universities have set out to provide the tools to acquire both.

Around the world, some 41 educational institutions have signed on to a partnership program that the CFA Institute initiated in April 2006. The schools embed in their graduate curricula at least 70 percent of the "body of knowledge" that forms the basis of the three CFA exams, and agree to periodic monitoring by the institute.

The linked curriculum eases the path for students to pursue a CFA charter either during or upon completing graduate study in finance or business. Participating programs within the U.S. include those of Boston University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Georgia Tech, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Creighton University, the University of San Francisco and the University of Cincinnati. Most award an MS degree in finance or investment management. A few award an MBA.

Several more institutions participate at the undergraduate level. They embed at least 70 percent of only CFA Level I material.

Outside the U.S., CFA Program Partner institutions include Oxford's Said Business School, the London Business School, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Bocconi University (Italy), and institutions in France, Australia, Canada, Argentina and the Philippines.

Foreign-based partner institutions outnumber the U.S. contingent by almost two-to-one. CFAI officials say they have several new U.S. partners in the pipeline, but want the geographic distribution of partner schools to reflect the CFA program's increasingly global candidate base.

One Institution's Experience

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School "made a deliberate effort" to cover most CFA material when it overhauled the curriculum for its MBA in investment management a couple of years ago, says Gregory Brown, concentration leader and curriculum advisor.

"Having a CFA is a benefit for some career paths," Brown says. "We certainly encourage students interested in buy-side career paths to pursue the CFA." MBA grads who did so obtained better results when seeking work in asset management, he adds. On the other hand, Brown says CFA participation makes no difference for students who seek roles in investment banking or sales and trading.

The CFA Institute does not charge fees to participating institutions, but conducts periodic audits to make sure each program conforms with partnership requirements.

  • Any Graduate degree from a recognized institution is more valuable than the CFA.
For some thats sad truth because all they have is the CFA and somehow think it puts them in the same category as people who went to Graduate school, whether it be M.S. or MBA.

  • Any graduate? I doubt it. Recruitment is on a case to case basis, and a MBA vs. CFA sometimes isn't the turning factor in their decision. Previous work experience would play a large role.

  • CFA provides in depth knowledge and self learning experience in finance when compared to a MBA degree.

  • I agree with you, any graduate degree is more  valuable than the CFA certification. Here is what intrigues  me: some companies would want you to get a CFA with your MBA, with my MBA I thought I wont need it, now I am thinking about it to better prepare my self for this though job market.

  • It really concerns me how people seem to get very defensive when the CFA charter is praised. All the article is saying is that there are advantages that come with attaining the charter and noone can discount that. Yes I agree, an MBA is a good qualification and that comes without saying. I have both so I know what I am talking about! But in my field the CFA is more applicable and frankly speaking, it has opened more doors for me than the MBA.

  • Hedgie is a guy who is trying to salvage the value of his MBA. In ten years, he'll show up at your office with his MBA and a squeegee. CFA and MBAs are on par with MFEs and PhDs soundly trumping both!

  • Impact of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Designation on Compensation
The 2005 study once again illustrated that employers are willing to pay a premium for investment professionals who have earned the coveted Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation. Among those with 10 years experience or more, those with the CFA designation out-earn their peers without the charter by 24 percent (median of $248,000 vs. $200,000). The gap is even wider among all respondents, regardless of levels of experience; those with the CFA designation command compensation levels 54 percent higher than those without it ($180,000 vs. $116,850). As for the value of the CFA designation compared to an M.B.A., the study shows that for professionals with 10 years experience or more, those with the CFA designation out-earn those with only an M.B.A. by 18 percent (median of $236,510 vs. $200,000); however, the combination of the charter and an M.B.A. ultimately proves to the most lucrative educational mix (median of $255,000).

'Employers recognize the value of the CFA charter because it's a measure of both competence and integrity,' said Bob Johnson, PhD, CFA, managing director at CFA Institute. 'T

  • The preceding comment was excerpted from a May 2005 press release in which the CFA Institute announced the results of its last compensation survey.  The institute conducted a new compensation survey earlier this year but hasn't released any results yet.  When I asked why, they explained that a new survey partner was used this year and the survey questionnaire itself was changed significantly, so it's taking longer to analyze it.
