If both are new to quant, is one with a PhD at age 40 more competitative than anothe with a Master at 36?

I am thinking whether I should persue the PhD degree becuase my career goal is to be a quant. Is anyone could help answer the following questions ? Thanks a lot for your kind help in advance.

  • PhD is an imperative on a quant desk / research. Rare exceptions but age is not a factor at all.

  • I did the Financial Engineering degree at Imperial College in London for 07-08; one of the most respected programs in the world. It was taught that one could simply be a credit analyst with a MSc. If one wanted to become a true-to-life (respected) quant, employers wanted to see significant academic development skills (PhD) which dovetails into working on platforms for top-tier institutions. Besides, a desks full of PhDs lures more competent and competitive, smarter quants in the future. Good Luck
