British grad 12 month NYC internship in Ops, BB bank; likelihood of finding Ops role in NYC, post internship?

I’m not naive enough to not realize my predicament as to why employers would want to hire someone from another country when there are so many jobless Americans in this awful recession. Nonetheless, I have reason to stay and would like to find the best method of doing so. Currently halfway through a 12 month internship at a BB bank and would love to stay in the city for further years; would appreciate any helpful comments in assisting me to achieve this. I’m work in Operations and would like to find similar back/middle office work in NYC post internship. I have a good bachelor’s degree in Economics and have previous experience from a 12 month internship at the UK's largest independant Stockbrokers. I may get offered a job from my current bank (performance and economy dependant obviously) but this would be back in London, not the US. I’m currently on a J1 visa where I have to return to the UK; I know the process of getting and paying for a different visa could impede my chances of obtaining job offers here; any comments from someone with knowledge of visa issues would be helpful. Thank you for your anticipated suggestions.

  • If you are on a J1 one visa, you are generally subject to a two-year absence from the United States. However, there is a waiver to this policy and I am not quite sure what the requirements would be to get the waiver. I would assume that if your current company would be willing to sponsor you for another type of visa, like L1, H1B or even permanent resident, there must be a way to circumvent the J1 rule and grant you a waiver. I would definitely consult with an experienced immigration lawyer. I can recommend you the Murthy Law Firm (http://www. murthy.com); I have used them myself and they are very good and knowledgable about the whole process. Good luck.
