If I just graduated from a top MBA program and am looking to switch careers, should education be first on my resume?

10 yrs of experience in BA roles, stuck in Audit/Compliance for the last 5. Just graduated from top 10 MBA program; if looking to switch divisions, should education be the first thing on my resume...how can this best be emphasized?

  • 10 years experience sounds like alot for putting education first. Maybe you can keep your resume to one page so that education will be on the front page at least. I'd want to make that sucker stand out as much as possible

  • DEFINITELY DO PLACE THE MBA AS FIRST THING ON YOUR RESUME! The preceding commenter (s.vp49) is mistaken. The standard advice for a new MBA grad, with which I fully concur, is this: You should indeed view your new job search as a "career switch," which means you are starting fresh, with a clean slate, unburdened by your previous 10-year career in audit/compliance. In contrast, if you placed that work experience from your past life atop your resume, then you would lose the potentially huge benefit of the top MBA program you just completed: less than 1 in 20 potential employers you applied to would even notice it. With a top MBA as first thing, you will be perceived as a typical member of the candidate pool eligible for front-office roles (in finance) or senior management-track roles (in industry, if that's where you're headed). Otherwise, you'd simply be viewed as a back-office or middle-office candidate and nothing more. --Jon Jacobs, eFinancialCareers News staff

  • What if you took a middle ground -- have a "Career Summary" section at the top of your resume, where you state the MBA up front and then emphasize the transferable skills you have. This could be things you learned during your grad studies or during your 10-year career.
