  • Not sure about equity research... but in the current market environment, if there are no jobs, then there are no jobs, no matter what Ivy League you went to or not. So you either spend time looking for a job - but you may not be that picky, or you decide to go for another Master's, which would at least enable you to delay your job search by a year or so. Hopefully the job market will look better then.

  • In normal times, CFA would be enough to get you interviews at some firms. MBA is clearly a plus, but I if you only have one, the CFA is better for equity research (different story for IB/PE). What other experience do you have? Any role where you have had investment responsibilities will be a help.

  • Why equity reseach? One of the few bright (or at least less dim) spots is risk management, and financial engineering is excellent background for that. I would recommend getting professional risk management certification from GARP or PRMIA, or at least become familiar with the study materials.

  • Pick a stock you like, write a research report on the company and apply for every "Associate Analyst" position listed. Most Senior Analysts will want to hire somebody who will be able to do their grunt work for them very quickly and thus, your research report will demonstrate your modeling, analysis and writing skills. Personally, an CFA/MFE from anywhere is more impressive than an MBA from HBS/Wharton/Stanford.
