M.S. Finance SUNY - Buffalo 3.7 GPA Jobs in New York City?

Hi, I completed my M.S. in Finance from SUNY - Buffalo with 3.7 GPA about three months ago and am not able to get a job in Buffalo. US Citizen. I do not need any work sponsorship. What is the job situation like in New York City? Is it worthwhile moving to New York City to apply for Finance jobs? I would appreciate any input from a recent Finance graduate who has had experience of job search in New York City. Thanks in advance.

  • There are plenty of jobs in New York City. Your GPA is a good start. However, many of the positions require special skills and certifications. Do you have a CPA or CFA? Do you know any programming languages or significant statistical programming packages (i.e. SAS, Matlab, SPSS)? Last, but not least, do you have at least three years of work experience? If the answer is no, your chances are very slim. I recommend you speak to the advisors at your school's career education center.

  • Thanks for your feedback. It is reassuring to know that there are Finance jobs in New York City. There are absolutely no Finance jobs over here in Buffalo. I have good quant skills and statistical skills and programming skills. I have M.S. in Financial Engineering from SUNY-Buffalo (GPA 3.7), and Ph.D. in Management Science from The University of Texas at Austin (GPA = 3.8). But no work experience. I taught in the Computer Science Department at Illinois State University for six years before I did my M.S. in Finance. If I come to New York City just with academic qualifications and no relevant work experience or certifications in the Finance area, will I have any luck? There really are no Finance jobs in the Buffalo area and I am currently doing contract programming work just to pay the bills. I do not have CPA or CFA, only M.S. (Finance) and Ph.D. (Management Science and Information Systems). But I have fairly advanced quant modeling skills and statistical skills (at the Ph.D. level).

  • I agree that there are jobs out there to be found, but the notion that "there are plenty of jobs in New York City" is a bit optimistic. Do remember that you are competing against the thousands upon thousands of people on wall street who have already been laid off. Not trying to make matters worse, just keep your hopes realistic.

  • If you have quant skills there are Global Association of Risk Professional (GARP) exam called Financial Risk Manager(FRM). This qualification can sure land you a Financial job anywhere. Google it and find more information on it. It a very rigorous quant program
