  • You could work at a hedge fund as an operations associate/analyst or on the trading desk as a jr. trader / trade support. If you can program then there are many opportunity in the latter.

  • You are a CFA level 1 candidate, not a cfa level 1. You are either a charter holder or you are not. If CFA charter holder hears you refer to yourself as a CFA level 1 you will have trouble finding a job.

  • the market is tanking!!! if you have a job stay there until you at least complete your CFA (assuming your company is paying for it), or the market starts to rehabilitate itself - whichever happens first. if you are really bent on getting out of your current situation, try Dubai, or any of the countries with large sovereign wealth funds, there could be opportunities there. there have been 114,000 jobs cut by I-Banks worldwide as of early September (according to Bloomberg) that number has surely risen since then. but my immediate advice would be to build your career where you currently are, and complete that CFA, in preparation for when times get better.

  • The first thing you should understand is that there is no such thing as CFA1...if you are a CFA candidate that has passed the Level 1 exam, please plainly state this and indicate if you are currently registered for the Level 2 exam in June of 2009. The second issue--when you say you worked in "finance"--does this mean you were working as a member of treasury or controller ops...or are you registered to handle securities (series 3,5,6,7,15,22,52,55). The analytical requirements are theoretically the same but if you are interested in analyzing or trading in the alternative funds industry, you will need experience (preferably a sound P/L history) in entering and exiting the capital markets with sound strategies. While I have hired individuals that worked in corporate finance, I find that they are not as proficient with the stochastic modeling required in the asset management and capital markets.
