I am 4 yr Sr Analyst at minor Regulator in DC. Want to move to SF, CA. Should I leave job to network in CA?

I am using CA local address and number for contact, so I am virtually in SF. However, it seems like switching from Fed to private is particularly difficult in SF.

  • Leaving your job before you've lined up another one would be a pretty risky strategy. You can do a lot of networking via e-mail and phone to set yourself up for a trip out there. Doing some research, making some calls, setting up meetings for a week when you travel over there sounds like a better idea than cutting off your income stream. And the Federal government being the inefficient animal it is (I've worked there), it should be easy to do this at work.

  • I agree with the first comment. In fact I'd go further and say that quitting a job now (even a terrible job) just to seek another job is worse than "pretty risky" - in the current job market, it's downright foolhardy, from a career management perspective. Didn't your mother teach you that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? (On the other hand, I do realize there are other perspectives, even though I work for a career-management site. For someone who is, say, 26, has plenty of savings and whose girlfriend is already living in San Francisco, being willingly unemployed in SF might trump being unhappily employed in DC. But that glow will probably fade by the time your stint of unemployment passes the 1-year mark.) While I can personally attest to the truth of that other old chestnut, "Looking for a job is a full-time job," in reality it is never necessary to quit one's job to hunt for a new one. The wise course is to combine working with job-hunting. The previous commenter, "JohnnyA," laid out a good blueprint for how to do that. -- Jon Jacobs, eFinancialCareers News staff
