  • Sorry to hear that. I similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago. When I realized that I had a near-zero chance of getting into a 'front office' position where I was working (about a month after starting), I immediately started looking for a new job. I received an offer with a strategy team at another bulge bracket firm about six months later. Definitely start looking now. Don't convince yourself that if you work hard in your current position, someone will notice you and help you get where you want to be. If you realize this won't happen after two or more years of waiting, you will find it much harder to go elsewhere. Once you have a few years of operations experience, anyone who sees your resume will think of you as an operations person and won't be able to see you elsewhere. Start looking immediately, be persistent, and good luck!

  • No, it's not too late, if you graduated no earlier than 2005. But market conditions make it tougher to switch to front-office (research) at this time, since big banks aren't adding slots and so many candidates with bulge-bracket backgrounds are looking for work. If you work at a bulge-bracket, make discreet inquiries internally first, to scope out what you'd have to do to make an intrenal move, your odds of success, and the risk you'd take by trying. (If you don't know anyone to consult, try your alumni directory or LinkedIn to locate fellow alumni who work at your firm.) If an internal move appears unrealistic, then look into opportunities at boutiques. Many smaller or regional players avoided serious damage from the credit crunch, and are adding staff while while Wall Street is contracting. Boutiques that hired researchers lately include C.L. King, Jefferies, Collins Stewart, and B. Riley. --Jon Jacobs, eFinancialCareers News staff
