Do I need a PhD to work in Stat Arb?

I have a M.S. in Statistics and 5 years experience in load forecasting. I have no finance experience. Do I need a PhD in Statistics/Econometrics to work in Stat Arb? Or will a top-school MFE be a better choice? An MFE is significantly faster, but I worry that MFEs get stuck in implementation and not research roles.

  • Forget the stat arb...they blew up already. And yeah, if you don't have PhD, don't expect to work in Quant.

  • No matter what your skills are do not expect recruiters to be open minded enough to try to understand if you are a good fit for the job. What do they tell you in school? That your resume and cover letter need to be impeccable with not typos! Well, take a look at the job adds and see what a perfect English wording they use when they try to hire you. The point is that whatever you apply for, the recruiter will probably be an illiterate who does not understand a thing of you resume! The only words they care to see is Harvard, MIT...
