Should I necessarily include my PhD on the resume?

I have a PhD and a MBA. And I am planning a career change. I am afraid my PhD is distracting recruiters from my business mind and make me look overqualified. Does omitting the PhD from my resume equate to lying?

  • I don't see why you should hide your PhD. Your PhD already speaks volume about yourself and your MBA already tells people that you have a business mind. Good people will find you-- just ignore the bad ones.

  • It is perfectly acceptable to omit a PhD, or any other degree or qualification. On balance, when applying for jobs in finance, being overqualified is more damaging than being underqualified. So go ahead and leave it off. If your doctorate is in a non-quantitative subject, or even in say, physics but you're seeking work in a sales role, then it isn't relevant to your career goal - so don't even think about including it on your resume. Even if it is relevant, no one will accuse you of "lying" if you omit it. If you get into an interview process and discover that the PhD would add value to your candidacy, you can always disclose it later in the process, and explain that you'd initially omitted it because you felt it wasn't relevant. Omitting a qualification is in no way comparable to stating a qualification that you don't have.
