  • with a 3k/month for a decent 1 bed in Manhattan, 100k would barely get you by if you are alone. If you have a family..... you need to seriously consider living in the suburbs. Still 120-130k is the existential minimum. If you have children and insist on living in Manhattan, think 24000 a year for private school per child, if you can get them in.

  • I have a list of salary resource web sites on my own web site at http://www.gccoach.com/articles/SalaryResearch.htm. I particularly recommend taking a look at Vault.com's Salary Central, as it includes recent salary data at top law, consulting, and finance firms, investigated and updated periodically by Vault. • It really depends how nicely you want to live, if you're single, etc. If you want a modest 1BR apartment (say 60sq meters) in a decent part of town, that's $2500/month, which means you'd have to make $100,000 per year in order to be allowed into the building.
