Transfer from Investment Banking to Trading

I'm a graduate with a quantitative background (actuarial studies) and currently work in the investment banking division of a top-tier us firm. But after about half a year of working there, I'm really starting to miss the quantitative work that i did in my uni degree, so was wondering if anyone knows how hard it is to move from IB into like a fixed-income or derivatives trading role as an entry level position? Also, what is the best way to go about doing so?

  • Now I know virtually nothing about this, but I guess if u went up the ladder of education in quantitative majors (actuarial studies or other) , u'd certainly have a much bigger opportunity to move to an entry level quant.

  • Agree with previous comment. Suggest you network through your university's alumni network (and/or everybody you know outside of your immediate work environment) to get an informational interview with a few traders, including at least one hiring manager. Outside of that, the transition should not be that difficult. It sounds like you are only 6 months out of college; you are not that different from the other undergrad quant jocks that are sought for trading positions. I also suggest that you check out sample job descriptions for traders either on this site or using a job posting aggregator such as Indeed.com.

  • 6 months not that long...furthermore u'll have better advantage over fresh grads, having the same specialised experiences as u. Nonetheless, not sure if u can demand non-fresh pay.

  • Surprisingly hard to move from corp fin to the markets side of the bank. Suggest you move sooner than later before you are tagged as a 'banker'
