I actually have the same background as you and have recently had a few interviews that I am hoping will pan out. Here's what I found. Most banks have equity research positions and usually a couple of associates or analysts that focus on the macroeconomy and market strategy. This is where candidates like us stand out because of our background in both economics and finance. Start looking for positions like this and then once you're in, it will be much easier to more over to equity research from the inside if that's what you're looking to do. Also, make sure that you hit up alumni that work in the field and don't underestimate the informational interview. The interviews I have been on were a direct result of e-mailing the MD directly. It may seem bold, but so far it has worked. Just don't apply to the same jobs I am applying to because I don't need the extra competition. Good luck.
