ER2011

Question: How do I move from Middle Office Trade Support to Equity Research?

I currently work for a large US BB in equity derivatives trade support and have done for the last 3 years. I’m currently looking at ways to move into ER. I have first class degree from top 10 uni and CFA L2 (currently studying towards L3). Having no luck internally or through recruiters. Does anyone know of any roles that would be easier to get and bridge the gap for a move into ER a few years later? Is it worth getting onto a solid MSc Finance course (LBS/LSE/HEC)? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

  1. To be honest, it’ll be a steep climb for you. Sitting (successfully) for the CFA certainly sends good signals, and and MSc from a top program could help, but even these things combined won’t be enough most likely.

That is, what are you doing in terms of networking? When you say “no luck internally” how are you going about trying to move internally? If you are not already doing so, talk to as many people in ER as you can internally, go through your alum network from uni for ER folks, go to CFA events (great place to meet analysts, sell and buy side). Do this and you may make some necessary connections. Keep on those connections for more connections, info on new opportunities, and advice.

You may consider an MSc, for networking purposes largely, if your uni network in ER is not that large.

    Hope this helps

  2. Maybe an Accounting role in an accounting firm or company’s finance department, or for FIG, treasury.
