Thursday nights are City night. Thursday is the night when we all go out to play, with clients or each other or both. You can almost guarantee that 50% of the desk will be nursing a hangover on Friday morning.
So where should you go if you want to encounter bankers engaged in R&R? For food, I suggest Coq d’Argent near the Bank of England. Client entertainment will normally take place at Goodmans, The Palm, Hawksmoor, Nobu, Zuma, Roka, Hakkasan, Galvin La Chapelle or The Square.
Canary Wharf-based bankers drinking alone after work usually choose local bars like Smolensky’s or First Edition. The Chelsea crowd will be seen at the Admiral Codrington, Cadogan Arms or The Anglesea Arms.
For serious partying, anything goes. Aura, Mahiki, Cuckoo, The Box, Public….simply depending on the crowd and the night. I recently went to watch Swedish House Mafia play in Alexandra Palace and spent the evening bumping into colleagues and clients.
For brunch to cure the hangover, try anywhere along the Kings Road, near Sloane Square or in Notting Hill. Try Aubaine, Botanist, Raouls, Duke of York Square.
Further afield, Cartier Polo, Hurlingham Polo and any other big sports event see the finance world come out in mass. While these guys work hard they play harder.
Keen to keep fit, bankers can often be found playing five-a-side football up in Liverpool street, working out at the Reebok in Canary Wharf or the Chelsea Club (frequented by the Late Princess Diana). You will also find them practising their golf swing at London City Golf, Dukes Meadows or Urban Golf in Smithfields while Wentworth and St Georges Hill are popular at weekends.
Finally, Bikram Yoga in the city is a keen favourite. However, whether you will be able to network with potential employers while perspiring heavily, is questionable.
