Forget what urban legend may have you believe, women really do want to work for investments banks. They just may not want to work for yours.
ABN AMRO, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, and JPMorgan can pat themselves on the back according to results to a poll from Aurora, a women’s network. All feature on a list of the top 50 companies women in the UK want to work for, reported in yesterday’s Times.
Perhaps the list is more informative when it comes to where women don’t want to work.
Where, for example, are Credit Suisse, UBS, and Merrill Lynch? Where are Citigroup, BNP Paribas and Bank of America? And where is Dresdner Kleinwort, which has been plagued with discrimination law suits this year, and could probably benefit from having its name in female-friendly lights.
It seems absence need not be incriminating. Credit Suisse tells us it didn’t actually enter this year’s survey. UBS declined to comment, and a quick stroll down to its Liverpool Street offices revealed a healthy number of women passing through the revolving doors, one of whom told us, “Of course I’m happy to work here. Would I be here if I wasn’t?”
