Another eFinancialCareers reader has bravely put forward their CV for some (constructive) criticism in a bid to enhance their job-hunting potential. Below is their profile (with all personal details removed) and little about their search for new employment so far. Can you offer some tips about where they may have been going wrong and what, exactly, can be improved about their CV?
“I’ve been looking for a job for almost a year. I have been applying to VP level jobs in private equity or asset management in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, etc. I’ve targeted PE firms, SWFs, money managers and although I have some relevant financial experience from within the region – going back 4-5 years ago – one of the objections has been that I have not experienced first hand the recent boom in the industry in the region, nor have any known regional or blockbuster names on my deal sheet or much buy side track record. I have also moved around quite a bit during my career thus far, but nevertheless, gained tremendous exposure from the various roles I was involved in.”

Firms would normally hire analysts with 2 years experience minimum and you only got your experience after doing your MBA. You have limited private equity experience for the level you are applying for, one would expect a lot more experience in the industry or within investment banking. I would suggest you lower your expections to start at the associate level. Please also bear in mind that with the current climate there are exPE people also trying to get back into the game from B school and the industry is hardly booming at the moment. Good luck with the search.
My comment would be the CV is trying to be all things to all men, which gives me the impression that the experience detailed in the CV is not of any great depth in any particular area.
Most of the experience I am seeing is of a support/mid office function and not front office. There is an attempt to highlight front office skills in a couple of points. There are no specific deals mentioned, which, if you are targeting an investment role is a MUST on the CV, or an attached deal sheet.
My summary advice would be to really think about which specific role you are best suited to where your experience would add value for an employer, and bring out those skills, backed with focused experience.
Good luck
