Question: criminal conviction disclosure

I have a criminal conviction for not travelling with a valid ticket on London underground. I have disclosed this in my application for a middle office role at a top tier bank. Will this have an impact on my application?

  1. Probably not. Regardless, you were right to disclose it.

If you do not, and it it later found out, you will for sure loose that employment offer, not because of the conviction, but because of the failure to disclose which will raise issues of trust.

  2. This will most probably mean that your application will be reviewed individually by HR. Because the decision is so individual, it’s impossible to say whether they will use common sense and disregard it, or whether they will take a stringent attitude to this fraud conviction. Good luck!

  3. Remember – Honesty is the Best policy. It’s a timeless truth.

  4. well actually i have already got the job offer. i have to fill out a form with my education / work experience details and in there i have disclosed this conviction. hopefully they don’t rescind the offer because of this minor offence.

  5. It is good that you have the offer – however, the bank can withdraw the offer since I suspect that the terms will say that the offer is subject to satisfactory references. I agree with the others that it is always best to volunteer this information, and I would be surprised if they withdraw the offer. However, in case they do, make sure that you do not resign from your current role yet – make sure that you get confirmation. If the offer is withdrawn I would recommend that you appeal against the decision. Good luck

  6. i am in the same situtation, i have an offer and a start date shortly, i didn’t even know i had a criminal record and replied negatively when asked the question “do you have any criminal convictions?” I later found i do therefore what is my best course of action ? Approach HR and advise them? That’s what i’m thinking ,but damm it looks bad!!! I have in my favour an Enhanced Disclosure Form which is 3 years old which shows no convictions whatsoever so i think that works in my favour slighly? ps. i’ve quit my previous job !!!!!
