Question: Passed all CFA exam, 1.5 year M&A in Energy co. in Australia. Looking for IB role in UK, advices pls?

Will go to UK on HSMP. CFA charter holder pending status (2.5 more years of experience needed). With 1.5 year M&A experience in an Energy company in Australia (not IB), how hard is it to get an IB analyst role in UK? What salary to expect? Thanks.

  1. We are currently going through one of the biggest financial crisis in modern time, and banks are laying off more than they are recruiting. This means that there are many highly skilled individuals out there looking for a job (including lots of M&A bankers). Not wanting to sound doom-like, but this is not exactly the right time to look for a job in one of the most competitive job-market in the world!

  2. There is still some demand for energy/utilities specialised guys. I think that your best shot is with infrastructure funds, specialised boutiques rather than mainstream investment banks, which are currently busy laying off people. Put forward your experience and sector focus rather than your CFA because this is what matters at the end of the day on the M&A side.
