Now is the time. Q1 and start of Q2. Asset Management generally is a year after banks in most things, so while the banks were doing substantial hiring in 09, I think asset management is likely to be the place in 2010. Good luck!

As to how it depends on how aggressive you want to be.
You could get some friend’s address and get them to send you a prepaid sim (one that works abroad). Just pretend you are already here and apply apply apply. In my experience, responding to ads here gives quicker results in terms of contact than registering with company websites. Once headhunters start responding, see what feedback you get.
The downside of this is of course if they do want to interview you, you may need to come to London within a few days. The upside is you don’t have to move first.
In my experience, there is very little point in applying from abroad. They will rarely fly you over for interviews nowadays plus they may not want to pay for your move and wait for you to settle when the other candidates are waiting and available ina month.
