Question: What is the difference between starting in proprietary trading and starting in investment bank trading.

I know there is difference in base salary, but what about training ? Future prospects ? How difficult it is to switch to IB trading later ?

  1. depends what prop trading? are talking about houses like Tibra or some whack outfit like Amplify trading? Either way its better to start at a bank, learn the business – then if your good move into prop trading. altho – i have heard of wizz-kids who have been hired directly into hedge funds as junior traders…altho thats rare.

  2. Friend – you may as well be working for Ladbrookes or PartyPoker.com Prop trading arcades have a similar amount of kudos with the street.

Look the only way you are going to get any attention is by making a serious amount of cash and a trading p&l you can prove, in a sexy asset class. Then you are going to need to network directly with CIO’s in HFs or heads of desks in IB. Focus on firms that trade in the same asset classes as you and be persistent. Chances are that 99 out of 100 will not even look at you. So it’s a numbers game. Good luck.
