Are you quiting in Q2?

Having just got your bonus, are you now searching for new work in Q2? And are you hopeful of finding the job you want?

Recruiters think the current quarter will be a busy one. They say many employees want to move because they are annoyed with their bonuses, while other candidates have happily pocketed their payments and are now finally free to leave for other reasons.

If you’re planning to quit your job in Q2, what is your main motivation? And how confident are you about the current employment market?

Does being “last in, first out” still scare you? Let us know below.

  1. hey, if you’ve been looking for work for a year like me, then Q1, Q2, Q3, it doesn’t matter what the Q is now…you’re still looking!

  2. As a recruiter, I feel the current hiring momentum in Asia will carry us through Q2 and into the second half of this year. Candidates need not rush into jobs that don’t suit their needs out of a fear that things will suddenly dry up. While I agree that Q2 will probably see the most activity, Asia will be talent short in 2010 and 2011.

  3. zax, firstly hope that’s not your real first name, and secondly, Asia may be talent short, but banks are ultra selective…being a candidate is not as simple as you make it sound.

  4. I have to agree with job-less since i am in the same position. Employers are waiting out for the perfect match it seems as it still remains an employers’ market and both people who have jobs and jobless are all looking around. its just very competitive out there and even settling for less doesn’t mean employers will be satisfied because its clearly still not a match

  5. Agree with Job-less. I’m unemployed too and still counting, turning 1-year anniversary soon. It looks like employers are still selective and cost-conscious, nevermind those made it to the headline news of recent musical chairs going on among the Wall Street firms. I wrote in to jobs and received replies from consultants that like my experience and skills, but their clients feedback was I’m too senior and expensive. No interviews so far, no chance to even negotiate (lower). sigh.

  6. Too many roles are required by the companies from the candidates. It is not always possible for a single person to have multiple skilsets as expected. And the quality of work will not be good if multi tasking is being forced beyond limits or expectaitons.

  7. Individual fate never matches the trend exactly.

  8. I think this does not apply to non-cyclical business with lower stock market correlation like Private Equity.

  9. I have been hearing “tips” from friends suggesting “who might be hiring” and “things are definitely picking up”. But as far as I can see, activities are mostly concentrated in investment banking and sales (“sell-side”) and still not much is happening in private equities, hedge funds (“buy-side”). Just want to see if this is what most people see too or whether I am just missing the actions.

  10. I started my new job in Feb 2010 with a salary increment & hopefully better bonus during year-end & more incentives within the year.

  11. despite all the optimism in the property market, it is still tough to change job or even find jobs as employers have the luxury to choose from a huge pool of talent.
perhaps as a beacon of hope, i have seen three colleagues moved on. one was in legal, two were in investments (PE and equity PM). So continue to plug on, the job will come in eventually.

  12. I agree with people saying that job market is still tough. Unless you have contacts who can refer you to all those invisible job openings that pops up once in a while going through consultants might really not help a lot.

  13. gklchan – sellside here is stirring up a little (though not as hot as HK), buyside picking up in HK but absolutely dead here.

  14. I belong to the operation side of banking. I have been job hunting since 2008 till now. I think i am drying up soon. Attended like 5-6 interviews which were absolutely positive but it still the same old waiting game. Btw, is it a norm to be waiting for 1 month plus for jobs belongin to backroom operations in mncs?

  15. I’m in operation side too. I got 4 interviews within a month & clinched a job late Feb this year.

  16. I’m finding it tough looking for jobs in Operations or either other field most of the time i visited are Agencie that give no reply after going though their interview and wasting alot my time and cost for traveling to those agencies that located far from my work place.

  17. To seasoned i-bankers who grouse about joblessness:

Ever considered quitting as an employee to seed your own financial services practice?

If you are seasoned and also possess the gumption; you will have breadth and depth of network, and enough deal awards, and wheeling and dealing experience under your belt to make it a success out there. There are still gaps in Asian markets, and the past avariciousness of the i-bank industry which led to collapse of some institutions has opened up considerable opportunities.

All said, the entrepreneurial route is a challenging one, and not recommended for those without passion for their mission.
