Two weeks ago we said prime broking recruitment was looking a little wild. Now it’s frothing at the mouth.
In the past few weeks, Citigroup has hired a new head of global trading for its prime finance unit (the sixth senior prime broking hire it’s made this year), JPMorgan has reshuffled management of its prime broking business in anticipation of growth, UBS and Morgan Stanley have swapped prime broking heads, HSBC has launched a prime broking unit, and so has Cantor Fitzgerald. Barclays Capital is also hiring.
“It’s absolutely getting more active,” says Andrew Morland at Pelham International. “There are a lot of new entrants to the market and they all need quality staff.”
“Citi is one of the big hirer’s this year. They’re hiring high quality talent right across prime finance and are looking to continue expanding,” says James Bridgman at Kinsey Allen.
Privately, headhunters express doubts whether HSBC will be able to attract top tier prime broking talent: “Historically they haven’t paid very well,” says one.

Where is everyone Sarah…?
Very quiet here today
@Olga – I guess they’re either somewhere hot, or else sitting in a darkened room sobbing about the state of the British weather. In fact, Omniture (which measures the number of people who read articles and visit the site) suggests that there are people around, but they’re just not saying anything.
You want a comment, I’ll give you one.
The guy in that teaser advert for London Business School at the top of EFC’s home page looks so much like Heinrich Himmler, its scary. I’m serious, I wish they’d start running a new advert.
I’m not sure it’s the weather. You know who I think is to blame the decline in open debate and comments here?
1. City Recruiters
2. Gordon Brown
3. Mr Blobby
4. HR – the whole profession (are they classed as a profession?)
5 The Iran President
6. Henry
7. The Italian PM
8. Henry Paulson
9. Olga, the nice Polish girl looking for for front office job
10. Sarah, the nice editor that writes (..words usually)
There you go….that may help kick some debate!
Sarah – as it’s quiet why don’t you have some light hearted articles through the summer
@Olga- You’re right, I really blame Silvio Berlusconi. And bt, I’m off on holiday at the end of this week and have lined up light hearted articles for the rest of August.
Olga – You’re a bit of a douche, let’s debate that
@ATK thank you. very kind of you. Are you recruiter without any jobs to fill?
ATK and Olga are both idiots.
Discuss
@Olga – Absolutely, and I’m three days away from a two week holiday in the Maldives so I couldn’t care less. That’s what a person is able to achieve by holding down a job, working hard and having solid relationships. Now good luck finding a job … keep applying to those adverts like a good girl.
@ATK Don’t be silly. no point in applying to ads and recruiters in this market. It’s all about working my charm and networking! Have fun in the Maldives, I’ll be thinking of you whilst sipping my Vodka and Lime in Mayfair ;)
@Olga, And I’ll be thinking of you whilst sipping on my freshly made pina colada. Each to their own I guess ;)
