It’s official: Qatar is the new place to be in the Gulf

One of the side-effects of the Arab Spring has been a gravitation of financial services professionals towards safe havens in the Gulf; notably, Dubai and Qatar.

However, according to a new survey, Qatar is now the most reputable Gulf financial centre in the eyes of the international community. While banks are talking up expansion in Doha, Dubai continues to slide down the international rankings.

The latest Global Financial Centres Index produced by consultants Z/Yen, places Qatar at 30th, while Dubai has slipped down from 28th to 36th.

This is in part because financial services professionals around the world are now less convinced that Dubai has the potential to become a significant international financial centre, according to the report’s author Mark Yeandle, but also because sentiment around Qatar is on the up.

“A lot of the banks we speak to are upsizing their offices in Qatar, so jobs are being created there,” he says. “This isn’t necessarily to the detriment of Dubai, but more and more financial services professionals view it as an attractive place to be.”

But are there really that many jobs in Qatar? Dubai remains the largest financial centre in terms of employment – over 11,000 people work in the DIFC alone – but while recruitment has stalled in the UAE, Doha continues to offer opportunities.

“Companies in Qatar are building and growing, but the job numbers are still relatively low,” says Peter Greaves, director of financial markets at headhunters McArthur Murray. “More banks are recruiting juniors to support what was previous a small group of senior ranking advisory professionals. However, in terms of traffic, there’s more movement from Saudi to Qatar than people moving from the UAE.”

  1. Some food for thought: Qatar Financial Centre QFC has been associated with the GFCI publication for the past two issues. The ranking and report is sponsored by Qatar Financial Centre QFC.
This is an important point which should have been mentioned in the article.

  2. I really doubt whether Qatar can compete with Dubai. Dubai is still attracting more banking professionals than Qatar and this will continue to be the case… The reason is quite simple: Qatar is so boring. The lifestyle in Dubai is simply much better. I really doubt whether Qatar will ever be on the same level as Dubai…

  3. Toni, your comments strike to me as immature. You qualify the strengh of a financial center for how “happening” its nightlife is?

  4. ME,

I lived in Dubai for five years and worked there for a british IB. I also visited Qatar many times. I spoke to many financial professionals in Dubai and Qatar and all of them agreed that Dubai is simply a stronger financial center. One of the main reasons is the fact that Dubai offers better and more leisure activities while Doha is boring. Of course, the lifestyle of a city is not the only factor determining the strength of a financial center. But it is a crucial factor!

However, the UAE, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai, have a stronger infrastructure… Qatar lacks behind… They need more than ten years to be on the same level as the UAE…

By the way, nightlife is just one element of lifestyle… Maybe, for you lifestyle is just nightlife… For me, lifestyle is more than just nightlife…

So good luck in Doha… I am sure you will have a phantastic career there and a happy and exciting life! ;-)
